Name : Chang Ling Shan
Matric Number : CIC 150007
First day : 26/2 (SK
KELANA JAYA)
Today is our first day
of social engagement. Our venue was SK Kelana Jaya. The students at there are
special students which are down-syndrome, mentally problem and so on. So this
is the best chance for us to interact with outsiders and show our love toward
them. We gathered and departed at 6.45am.
We started our social
engagement by warming-up exercises once we reached there. After the warm-up
session, we started dividing all the 50 students into 3 groups and leaded by
us. First of all, I was very worry about all the students don’t want to follow
our instruction and ran everywhere. But luckily, all the students are very good
and behaved themselves. The teachers are very responsible. They also helped us
to control all the students. At the morning section, we done three activities
which are yeagley test, 10m dribbling test, 20m sprint. From these activities, I had
learned a moral value from them which is determination. We can’t give up so
easily although it is a hard task for us. For example, although they are
imperfection children but they still accomplished their task. I admired them so
much.
After the morning
section is our lunch break. Seeing all those students, we could feel the
happiness of a child and they didn’t have so much troubles in their daily life.
And it made us miss our primary school life. After the lunch break, is our
second section, which is to measure their height, their weight and their
ability of stretching. Although the weather was very hot, but they still follow
our instruction and did it patiently. I admired them so much !
At 12.00pm , we
finished all the activities and prepared to go back our university. In
conclusion, I very like and enjoy this activity because it was awesome and it
made us become more closer to our coursemate and know more about how to talk
with those children and made fun with them. The most touching part was after
all the activities had ended, all the teachers and students ‘salam’ with us. It
was long time ago I didn’t salam with all Malay friends. After this social
engagement, I really appreciated what I had now and what I had met at there. I
really love this kind of activity and I really enjoy it so much.
Second day : 4/3 (
SMK KELANA JAYA )
This
is our second times for social engagement. Our venue was SMK Kelana Jaya. Same
as last social engagement, we gathered and departed at 7am by grabcar. This
time, we did all the same activities like last time. But the only difference is
today is at secondary school, different age.
At
first, we started our day by doing warm-up activities. This time, we had more
experience to handle it and known all the flow of that day already. For the
morning section, we done three activities which are yeagley test, 10m dribbling
test, 20m sprint. Some of them are
hyperactive children so they ran here and there all the time so we need to
control them patiently and guide them all the time.
After
that is our lunch break for 30 minutes. We continued our second section by
measuring their height, their weight and their ability of stretching. Because
all of them are secondary students already, so they sure will follow your
instruction and show you their commitment. At 12.00pm , we finished all the
activities and prepared to go back our university.
By
doing research with some of the students, I had known more about their life in
school and in house. It was quite touching because not all of them were willing
to share with you about their life. Some of them very quiet so they did not
have so much friends but they still enjoy their life. It taught me that I need
to appreciate what I had now and care more about others especially imperfection
people in this society. What they want is not our money but they need our cares
!
Third day : 27/3 (
MBPJ )
Today was our third
times of social engagement. It was different from last two social engagement
coz we were not going to school anymore. But we were going to join PJ car free
day which organised by Majlis Bandar Petaling Jaya (MBPJ). Once we reached
there, we could see many of them were ready for the bicycle marathon in
different age like children, teenagers and parents, different category like
normal people and oku category. I really admire all the oku participants. They are
so sporty. And also all the particpants because they were willing to sacrify
their sleeping time and join this kind of good events.
First of all, we started to set up everything.
For example, mural painting, banners, game banner and arranged the t-shirts,
books, skating shoes on the table, and also rearranged all the game prizes in a
box. The game prizes are colourful umbrealla, thermos, books and t-shirts.
After setting up everything, the person in charge briefed us and told us what
should we do. And I was in charge for the game. There have many booth at there
too. For example, booth of ktm, booth of lrt, booth of health-care and uber
promoting booth and so on.
After
that, the event started by doing aerobic exercise, leaded by some muscular man.
All the people here were quite sporty and joined this aerobic exercise and made
the place bustling with noise and excitement. After the aerobic exercise, the
cycling marathon were going to start already. Then many of them who doesn’t
participant in cycling marathon were started visiting our booth. They came and
enjoyed the mural painting, left their comments and signature on the board,
playing games and cycling by using our bicycle which had prepared at there. During
the activities, Encik Aidil came and supervised us and understood all the
activities that we had gone through.Next, there still had skating competition.
All of the them are trying their best to get the prize. I was get shocked
because first time watching this kind of competition lively. Besides, our PJ YB
also came to visit us. They left their signature at the signboard and also
painted the mural too.
Time
flies and it was 12pm and it was getting hotter and hotter. Most of the
participants were starting to leave. We started to keep all the tools and
cleaned the place. After that, we ended our third social engagement by having
lunch with all coursemates. I enjoyed this event too although it was under hot
weather. But u will definitely impress by the people who take part in
environmental protection activities.
Fourth day : 8/4 ( SK
SAM YOKE)
Today was our fourth
social engagement. Our venue today was SK SAM YOKE, which is a Chinese primary
school with special students too. This time, we were going to do the same
activities as usual. Same as last time, we gathered and departed at 7pm by
grabcar. We were impressed by the school. The buildings look very new, their
hall still got air-condition, and still have basketball court and some of the
teachers were using projector to teach their students.
Once all of us
reached the school, we did the warm-up exercises. Then, we divided them into 3
groups also and leaded by us. Same as usual, we divided into 2 section, morning
section and afternoon section. In the morning section, we done three activities
which are yeagley test, 10m dribbling test, 20m sprint with all the students. They are very good. They followed what
instruction you gave and did it correctly. We could feel that the students were
very happy while doing our activities.
Then is our lunch
break. The school teachers were very good and patient. They didn’t scold their
students fiercely but talked to them nicely. Teachers gave us and all the
students bread. They are so nice ! After
lunch break, we continued with our second section which is to measure their
height, their weight and their ability of stretching. In this school, the
students are very enthusiastic and cute. They always hugged you and played with
you. Some of them still slept on your leg and talked to you. It’s so warmth.
At 12pm, we almost
finished all of the activities already and at last, we ended up with photo
shooting with all the students and teachers. It’s was another happy day for me
and having memorable memories with all the kids and friends.
Fifth day : 6/5 ( SRI
KELANA)
Today was our last
social engagement. For the last social engagement, we decided to go back to SK
Kelana Jaya, where we carried out our first fitness and health assessment. But
we changed all the activities, we planned some games for them to enjoy. The
games included three-legged race, monkey catch ball and drawing.
Once we reached the
school, we started to do warm-up exercise. After that divided them into 3
groups as normal and leaded by us too. Then, we started our first game :
transferring water with sponge. They were really enjoy while playing this game.
They helped each other and cheered for other sincerely in order to accomplish
their task. Then we proceed to second game which is three-leg race. By having
this game, we could see that most of them were hard to balance their body and
cooperate with each other. But they still tried their best to complete the
task. They show us their determination and their patient in order to win the
game.
After that was our
lunch break. Some of the students ate with us and started chatting with us.
Then, we continued our indoor activities : drawing and sketching. For every
group, two of our members needed to take care of five students. We taught them
how to sketch cartoon and drawing Mother’s Day card. Some of them very
creative, they sketched doraemon, robots and houses. Next, we continued with
colouring because we still got time. We distributed a colouring book for them
and they began to colour. During the activities, Dr Eric came and supervised us
and understood all the activities that we had gone through. At 1130am, we
started to clean up the hall. And we took a group photo before going back to
our university.
By having social
engagement, I had learned a lot of things. I get to know how to interact with
children, how to communicate with each other, how to cooperate with coursemates
and how to manage your time. And the most important is understanding the
special need children’s feeling because we spend our time with them throughout
this social engagement. I really enjoy this event and I hope I still have the
chance to be volunteer for voluntary event in my future life.
