SK SRI KELANA (26/02/2016)
This
is our first day we went to our fisrt activity of social engagement which is in
SK Sri Kelana. We depart at around 6.30 am by taking the Grabcar. Since the
morning, I feeling excited but fear to meet with the child because I haven’t
experience to communicate with the special needs students.
Today’s
task is help the special needs students to complete a fitness assessment. After
all of us arrived the school, we entered the school compound to the field. The
teacher in charge informed us the students is high functioning and their ages between
7 to 12 years old.
After
all the special needs students came to the field, we started the warming up
exercise and ice breaking session with the students. The feeling between us and
the students become more relax and enjoyable. Before we start the fitness
assessment, we divided the students into 3 groups which are leads by Eric,
Sinlee and Huising. The fitness assessment included 20m sprint, dribbling a
ball around a course and running through a course of cones. Each group of students
carried out one activity respectively.
During
the activity, I face some problem and difficulties because some of the students
couldn’t fully understand our instruction to complete the assessment. They can’t
line up quietly for a long time and they always run here and there. This makes
me feeling impatient and fretful.
After
the half an hour break, we continued our physical assessment. We need to
measure their height, weight and flexibility which is sit and reach test and
one leg stand test. We also divided into 3 groups to carried out 3 types of
activity.
After
every group finished all the assessment, we go to left the school. We also very
appreciate the help of teacher who teach us to communicate with special needs
students. Although I am not so stay close with the students today, I still gain
some experience how to communicate with special needs children.
SMK
KELANA JAYA (18/03/2016)
This
is our second day of social engagement in SMK Kelana Jaya. As usual, we depart
at 6.30 am from our residential college and arrived there at around 7.00 am.
This time, we also will carried out fitness assessment with a group of low
functioning secondary school’s students which their aged between 13 to 17 years
old.
Has
the last time experience when communicate with special needs students, today I
got more confidence to have a good contact with them. I give myself a promise I
have to merge with all the students. At 7.30 am, we entered the school. After
all the students reach field and be ready, we start the warming up exercise and
ice breaking session.
As
the last time, we proceed to the fitness assessment session which included
three activities. The group leader allocates the task to us, I in charge of
record their three trial results. Today’s activity going with not so smooth
because there are more students run around the field than last time. This makes
us waste many times to chase them back into line.
Around
10 am, they going to have a break and rest because they couldn’t be hot and
tried. After the break, we continued the physical assessment which also same
with last time. The students are a little bit out of control because they are
low functioning students and they totally couldn’t understand the instruction.
When
we carried out assessment, we undergo a tough time. There is a girl keep run
out of line and she keep on picking up the leaves and brunches then put into
her mouth. So my coursemate, Amanda need to takes care her one by one. Beside
the girl, there is a boy keep silent when we talk to him, he just bowed his head.
But, when he familiar with us, he keep hug one of my coursement, Chuntheng and didn’t
let him go.
Finally,
we managed to finish the fitness assessment fortunately and able to take care
all of their safety. We heading back to residential college before taking a
group photo at the field of SMK Kelana Jaya. Today, I really learn a lot about
the low functioning special needs students and what is their needs. And I
become more patient with them
MBPJ
(27/03/2016)
This
is our third event for social engagement. Today we are carried out an activity
which is different as usual one. The event focus on Go Green Project which is
PJ Car Free Day. This event held on every first and third week of the month. We
come here for helping them promote and work up the booth of Go Green Project.
There
will be a road block from 7.00 am. So, we departed at 6.30 am and arrived MBPJ
at 6.45 am. We started our work with carry down all the things from lorry and
set up the booth. After setting up all the things, the person in charge started
to brief us about our job scope.
The main activity in this project including
cycling competition, skateboard competition and Zumba Fitness Competition. The
cycling competition started at 8.00 am. So, the place started to get more and
more crowded. There has a warm up session before the competition started which
lead by a Zumba dance teacher. In the moment, I feel unprecedented
ease and enjoyment in this morning.
I
in charge to distribute the flyer and promote their next event which is a
charity run. I also need to encourage people to donate their old bicycle. Sometimes,
they are not much people I also will help my friend to fill in the colour on
the poster.
While
some of my friend in charge of game station and selling merchandise that
provide by organizers for charity work. The game station including some board
game which is “snake chess” and “flying chess”. The game station is open to
public.
I
also help my friend to distribute the questionnaire about this event. We hope
to improve this event next time and gain more awareness and attention from
people but the response of people is not enthusiastic. The event ended with
lucky draw session and awards ceremony. We help the person in charge to pack
all the things back to lorry before we dismiss. I hope people have more understanding
about the environmental awareness and reduce the carbon footprint in city.
SJKC
SAM YOKE (08/04/2016)
This
is our fourth day of social engagement which is in SJK (C) Sam Yoke. This time
we also carried out the fitness assessment like first and second times. The
special needs students in this school include low functioning and high
functioning students with aged between 7 to 12 years old. This time we depart
slightly late because the teacher in charge asks us not to reach too early. We
depart at 7.00 am and reach there at 7.45 am because of heavy traffic jam.
We
gathered at the basketball court after all of us reached. We straight go into
the warming up session after all the students are get ready. After the warm up
session, we started the fitness assessment as last time.
Have
the last two times of experience, this time we can control and communicate with
the special needs students nicely since this school’s student is very obedient
while we divided them in 3 groups. The 20m sprint, dribbling a ball around a
course and running through a course of cones is carried out smoothly.
While
the activities are processing, the students are very cooperative and under control,
though they eager and excited to try the activities after our demonstrated. They
will lining up patiently, sitting down and chatting in groups with their
friends while the others is going to complete the activities. With the
expected, got few students will cry or run around the whole basketball court.
After
the break, we continued with the physical assessment which is recording their
height, weight and flexibility. The teacher is very familiar and cooperative
with us to control the students. So, our physical assessment can finish very
fast and all the students have try all the activities.
We
end all the activity earlier, then we started to chat and interact with the
students. This makes us have a further understanding with the special needs
students. Everyone have the responsible to protect every special needs child
and give them a warmer world. We taking a group photo before leaving the
school.
SK SRI KELANA (06/05/2016)
This
is the fifth and the last time of our social engagement. Today we are back to
the primary school that we had our first social engagement, SK Sri Kelana. Today,
we came back and prepared and planned some different and interesting game and
activity for them but not the fitness assessment.
Actually,
we had planned some indoor and outdoor game but due to the heavy rain last
night, the field is wet and dangerous to be used. It is very excited and
familiar to see the students again. This time, I can clearly feel they are more
close and obedient with us.
Before
the game start, we divided them into 3 groups as usual. While the leaders are
giving the students the instructions, we start to prepare the props of game. The
first game is to transfer the water using a sponge and squeeze it into a bottle
that we had prepared. They are very enjoyable and eager to play the game,
though they always squeeze the water outside the bottle.
After
we announced the result of the first game, we started the second game which is
three legged game. We divided them into pair according their height and body
size then we tied up their leg. They are very cooperative and obey our command.
I in charge of take care this safety because some of them are not good to
control their body balance. After the break, we proceed to their school hall to
prepare our next activity. When they finish they rest and back to the hall, we
divided them into many small groups which is 4 to 5 person.
We
started the next activity which is drawing and sketching session. I helped to
distribute the bamboo stick and the scraping picture. All of them given a
scraping picture and they can draw or sketch the scrape the pattern with their
imagination. But we still need to prepare some sample of scraping picture to
grab their attention to let them wouldn’t be run around the hall.
I
found that they have many ideas about what to draw and lot of them have talent
of drawing art. We leave the school after taking the last group photo for our
social engagement. I think this is my last social engagement but it is not my
last social charity work. I wish to help the persons who need the help, especially
the special needs students. After this several times of social engagement, I
think I haven’t problem to mix in and communicate with special needs students.
And I already found their talented, unique and interesting parts.
